This is one of the best exercises you can do on the Elite Rings. Don't be deceived by the cute name; this exercise would scare the pants off Ben and Jerry. The Ice Cream Maker is part of the progression towards learning a Front Lever, but it also stands alone as a potent exercise. It is a combination of a pullup and a front lever, so it works almost every muscle in your body, especially the pulling muscles in your arms and back. I learned this exercise from Jordan Jovtchev, world champion and Olympic gymnast. Since then, it has become one of my favorites for both strength and metcon workouts. If you go slow or add a pause in the front lever position, it's a powerful strength building exercise. If you go at a rhythmic pace, as in the video, it can be a great substitute for pullups in a metabolic conditioning workout.
For correct form, be sure to keep your body straight and extend your arms at the front lever position. Keep your legs squeezed together tight and your toes pointed. Brace your abs tightly and squeeze your butt to help keep a straight body line. For my full Front Lever progression, see my article published in the November issue of the CrossFit Journal. |
